The Horrible “New” iGoogle

Well they have publicly launched the new igoogle which for me and many others, we had all ready experienced this hell in beta. Most everyone who was beta testing it hated it and yet they launched it anyways… Apparently they just dont want to listen or dont care. I think Google figures it will shove this crap down our throats until we accept it or go elsewhere. As a temporary fix you can set your google to one of the many cctld google domains such as .ca, .ie, etc. Of course, they said they were going to eventually port it to other countries, so they will all eventually be a big steaming pile of igoogle crap. Anyways, since they probably wont do ever country at one time, here is a list of alternate google.tld’s you can switch to. Enjoy!

SUN Acquires MySQL

SANTA CLARA, CA January 16, 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire MySQL AB, an open source icon and developer of one of the world’s fastest growing open source databases for approximately $1 billion in total consideration. The acquisition accelerates Sun’s position in enterprise IT to now include the $15 billion database market. Today’s announcement reaffirms Sun’s position as the leading provider of platforms for the Web economy and its role as the largest commercial open source contributor.

This is definitely good news. Sun is a huge support of the Open Source movement and with their backing, they can make MySQL an even more powerful player in the database market. I have been using MySQL for years now and its my prefered datbase when setting up any websites. I cant wait to see what they do with MySQL. Heres a link to the full press release. Enjoy!

securenamesale.com is a scam

So I have had and sold several domains over the years. Some good some not so good. Well recently I started getting back into the business again and it seems that securenamesale.com is in the business of scamming people to go to their site and order a manual appraisal for their domain. Those stupid enough to do so then find out that the buyer is no longer interested in buying the domain name. Luckily for me, when he insisted I go do this before he would buy my domain, I decided to check shit out on Google. Well turns out this site does this to a lot of people. You can read a whole bunch of reports at www.domainappraisalscam.com. The unfortunate part is that they are doing a good job to keep the fake domains they are emailing from separate from the securenamesale site so I cant as of yet get that site shut down for spamming, but if I can find the link I will forward it to Godaddy who loves to shut down and take ownership of its customers sites. I will give an update once I found out anything. Oh and for the record, if you sell domains, tell any email address from the following names or domains to go fuck themselves.

Overview�

Horde3D is a small open source 3D rendering engine. It is written in an effort to create a graphics engine that offers the stunning visual effects expected in next-generation games while at the same time being as lightweight and conceptionally clean as possible. Horde3D has a simple and intuitive interface accessible from virtually any programming language and is particularly suitable for rendering large crowds of animated characters in next-generation quality.

The first version of the Horde3D SDK is now aviable for download. For those of you interested in creating your own games this graphics engine might be for you. I will probably download it myself and see what I can do with it. If I can actually make something playable I wil lbe sure to post some screenshots or something. AMD Buys ATI

While it has been rumored that AMD was planning on buying out ATI, they made the official announcement today. While I have never been an ATI fan, I am a huge AMD fan. Perhaps I will have to give ATI another chance. Heres the full article:

50TB DVD?!?!

An Indian born scientist in the US is working on developing DVD’s which can be coated with a light -sensitive protein and can store up to 50 terabytes (about 50,000 gigabytes) of data.

Professor V Renugopalakrishnan of the Harvard Medical School in Boston has claimed to have developed a layer of protein made from tiny genetically altered microbe proteins which could store enough data to make computer hard disks almost obsolete.

Imagine a DVD that could store more information then any single hard drive. Finally something that could store almost everyones porn collection! I would definately like this as it would be a good means to store different OS’s as well all the software and utilities I use. If I want to play an MMO, put in the Windows dvd with the game all ready installed, or if I want to setup a linux server, I could have it fully configured and ready to go. The one concern I would have is that it would have to have a very fast read/write speed in order for it to truly replace a hard drive. While it is definately an innovative creation, I would have to agree with the professor that it could create an easier means by which information could easily get stolen. DSL Linux

Now I am no Linux Guru but I have installed and messed around with a few different Linux distro’s. Recently I stumbled upon Damn Small Linux (DSL). Basically its a scaled down version of Linux meant for easy download and you can store it on a small usb drive, a business card cd, regular cd, or any other media device that can store 50MB. The greatest thing about it for someone like myself who is still learning Linux and is still primarily windows based, is that you can run it from within windows. So I can still use my windows apps while messing around with linux on the same machine. For more information check out their site:
